Communication Studies Departmental Scholarships

Created to support students studying within the Communication Studies Department at Longwood.

Note: This Scholarship is divided into 4 different awards from the Communication Studies Department.

1. Rising Star in Communication Studies. Available to students in each concentration: $250 per student. For first- or second-year majors or transfer students who are within the first year at Longwood. Students must exhibit classroom leadership skills, outstanding classroom performance, and the potential for making a contribution to the department, university, or community. Applicants must answer the following question in their materials: What will you do to contribute to or help advance members of the COMMunity, Longwood, or the Farmville community?

2. Academic Excellence in Communication Studies. Available to students in each concentration: $500 per student. The student must have completed at least 12 credit hours in the major, have displayed dedication in the classroom and to department organizations and/or campus media outlets. Student’s major GPA will be weighted heavily.

3. Superior Professional Development. Available to students in each concentration: $500 per student. The student must demonstrate outstanding work in course-related projects and/or significant contributions to campus professional organizations. (I.E.- PRSSA, Public Relations Campaigns, The Rotunda, WMLU-FM, Communication Audits, Social Media Campaigns, Non-Profit Fundraisers, Video/Audio Production, Web/Publication Design, etc.).

4. Communication Studies Department Internship. The Communication Studies department offers a $1,000 departmental internship for the 2020-2021 academic year. This year-long internship is totals 6 credits and could fulfill the COMM 492 internship requirement for graduation. The successful applicant will be working directly with Dr. Alec Hosterman on promotion and outreach for the department. Students will create strategies for promoting the department while telling the stories of our students, faculty, and staff. The intern will coordinate social and digital initiatives as well as plan and implement the #RealCOMM competition in the spring as well as work with the Longwood Academy for Event and Meeting Planning’s (LAMP) annual workshop. The successful completion of COMM 141 (C- or better) is required for acceptance.
