Cover-Rowles Social Work Scholarship

Originally started as a low-interest student loan fund in 1976 and converted to a scholarship in 2019, the Cover-Rowles Social Work Scholarship, which benefits students majoring in social work who are in need of financial assistance, was established by Mrs. Beatrice Rowles Miller of Brownsville, Texas, class of 1961. Mrs. Miller shared, “I do not feel that any sum would be adequate to express the gratitude of the many Longwood students to whom Mrs. Cover has given so much of herself over the years.” Mrs. Cover came to Longwood in 1948, after serving as teacher and counselor in Martinsville and Covington public schools. She holds the A.B. degree from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, the M.A. from the College of William and Mary, and has done additional graduate study at the University of North Carolina and the University of Virginia. A fellow of the American Psychological Association, Mrs. Cover served a two-year term on the Executive Board of the Virginia Social Science Association. At Longwood, she served on the Admissions Committee for many years, the President’s Advisory Council, the Longwood University Council, was class sponsor for the Class of 1961, and was Mother Patroness for Longwood’s chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha social sorority
